A number of horses over the years have run well in the Adelaide Cup on the back of a Lord Reims Stakes run including 2012 winner Enchanting Waters who went on to run fourth to Rialya in the Adelaide Cup.

Rialya also used the Lord Reims Stakes as her Adelaide Cup preparation running second to Enchanting Waters before her two mile victory.

The last horse to take out the Lord Reims Stakes – Adelaide Cup double in a single season was Apache King (2001).

Other recent Adelaide Cup winners to come via the Lord Reims Stakes along with Rialya include Capecover (3rd in 2010) and Lacey Underall (4th in 2008).

One of the races Lord Reims Stakes hopefuls may come via is the Listed Birthday Cup (2028m) held at the track a fortnight earlier.

Enchanting Waters ran third in the Birthday Cup before their 2012 Lord Reims Stakes victory while Rialya took out the Birthday Cup – Adelaide Cup double that year.

Another lead-up option for Lord Reims Stakes and Adelaide Cup hopefuls is the Listed SA Port Adelaide Cup (2019m) at Morphettville in late February on The Goodwod Day.

In 2010 Maunatrice won the SA Port Adelaide Cup before finishing a nose away second to Gyno in the Lord Reims.

Lord Reims Stakes History

First run in 1889 up until 1979 the Lord Reims Stakes was run over 2400-metres and was known as the West End Draught Stakes.

In 1980 the race gained Group 3 status having originally been a Principal race, and for two years the distance increased to 2600m.

A number of name, due to sponsorship, and distance changes followed but from 2004 onwards the 2600-metre distance stuck and the name Lord Reims Stakes came into effect in 2009.

Lord Reims Stakes Winners

A number of quality horses have won the Lord Reims Stakes over the years including recent champions Guyno (2011), Royal Player (2006) and Bel Air (2004).

The most famous Lord Reims Stakes winner however is the race’s namesake, Lord Reims, who won back-to-back editions in 1988 and 1989.
